The Resurgence of Chicken Cock Whiskey

Chicken Cock Whiskey has a rich history dating back to 1856, when James A. Miller established a distillery in Paris, Kentucky. Despite facing various challenges such as changes in ownership, a distillery fire, and even prohibition, the brand managed to survive until the 1950s when it eventually faded into obscurity. However, in 2011, the brand was resurrected when Grain & Barrel Spirits, known for other successful spirits brands like Dixie Vodka and High Goal Gin, acquired Chicken Cock Whiskey.

The revitalization process began in 2012 with the re-release of Chicken Cock Whiskey. However, the initial batches were flavored whiskey distilled outside of Kentucky, failing to capture the brand’s original quality and essence. It wasn’t until 46-year whiskey industry veteran Gregg Snyder took charge that a true revival of Chicken Cock began to take shape. Snyder was determined to bring the distillation process back to Kentucky and oversee the entire production process to ensure quality and authenticity.

Under Snyder’s supervision, Chicken Cock Whiskey is now distilled at Bardstown Bourbon Company according to his meticulous recipe. From barley to bourbon to barrel to bottle, Snyder personally oversees every step of the process, paying close attention to factors such as time, temperature, enzymes, and yeast. Notably, Snyder handpicks oak logs from Appalachia for barrel construction, selecting trees with tight grain and limited sunlight exposure on the north slope for added flavor complexity.

In the absence of the original recipes, Snyder crafted a high-rye bourbon reflective of the brand’s historical period. The core brand of Chicken Cock Whiskey features a grain bill of 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley, resulting in a unique and flavorful spirit. In addition to Kentucky straight bourbon and rye, a small batch bourbon, and a double-oak whiskey, Snyder also introduces limited-time offerings to satisfy the adventurous spirits enthusiasts seeking new experiences.

Snyder’s dedication to quality and authenticity has garnered praise from whiskey enthusiasts worldwide. A local whiskey bar, known for its discerning patrons and global whiskey tourists, conducts blind tastings of Chicken Cock Whiskey against other top brands. Remarkably, customers select Chicken Cock as the best whiskey 80% of the time, a testament to the brand’s exceptional quality and Snyder’s meticulous craftsmanship. While some may view it as boasting, Snyder sees it as validation of their efforts to restore Chicken Cock to its former high-quality status.

The resurgence of Chicken Cock Whiskey under Snyder’s leadership serves as a compelling narrative of perseverance, passion, and commitment to excellence. By honoring the brand’s heritage and embracing innovation, Chicken Cock has reclaimed its position as a premium whiskey producer, offering a portfolio of exceptional spirits worth celebrating. As the brand continues to grow and evolve, its reputation for quality and craftsmanship only continues to soar, solidifying Chicken Cock as a brand worth crowing about.
