Oregon’s Portland International Airport has recently unveiled the first phase of its brand new main terminal, a project that comes with a hefty price tag of $2.15 billion. The terminal boasts a plethora of new features including revamped check-in areas, wider TSA security screening zones equipped with state-of-the-art technology, and expanded public spaces that now include a pre-security section with stadium-style seating.
In addition to the physical upgrades, the new Portland Airport terminal is adorned with a distinct touch of local charm. Eleven new shops and eateries, all representing local brands, have been introduced to the terminal with three more set to open in the coming fall. The terminal’s design pays homage to the Pacific Northwest environment, incorporating a locally sourced timber roof with a stunning array of 49 skylights that flood the space with natural light.
Sharron van der Meulen, the managing partner of ZGF – the architectural firm behind the terminal design, emphasized that the terminal was specifically crafted to alleviate the stresses commonly associated with travel. Travelers are welcomed by sweeping views of the airfield, abundant natural light, and lush interior landscapes that emulate a tranquil stroll through a Pacific Northwest forest. These elements were strategically incorporated to evoke a sense of wonder and delight for passengers passing through.
Future Phases and Upcoming Enhancements
While the initial phase of the million-square-foot Portland terminal opened its doors in 2021, there are still more exciting developments on the horizon. The final phase of the project is scheduled for an early 2026 debut and will introduce 10 additional restaurants and shops, new airline lounges, waiting areas for arriving passengers, and enhanced amenities such as escalators, elevators, and restrooms. This full-scale transformation aims to provide travelers with a seamless and enjoyable airport experience from start to finish.
In addition to the main terminal overhaul, Portland Airport has been taking strides to modernize and enhance its overall infrastructure. Since 2020, the airport has expanded Concourse E, unveiled a new Concourse B, and launched a state-of-the-art rental car center. These ongoing improvements signify the airport’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs and expectations of its passengers while showcasing the spirit and essence of the Pacific Northwest region.
