According to a report by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, the number of people working remotely has increased significantly between 2019 and 2023. This shift has led to a permanent arrangement for many companies, with 40% of U.S. employees now working remotely at least one day a week. The International Workplace Group conducted a study comparing 30 cities globally to determine the best locations for work and vacation. The cities were rated on criteria such as climate, culture, accommodation, transport, food, subsistence (cost of a coffee), happiness, broadband speed, sustainability, and availability of flexible workspaces. These factors were chosen to measure the comfort and productivity of workers in each location.

Budapest topped the list of the best cities for workcation in 2023, scoring high in categories such as accommodation, transport, sustainability, and broadband speed. The Hungarian capital is known for its classical architecture, vibrant neighborhoods, and ample green spaces, making it an ideal choice for digital nomads. Other cities that made the top 10 list include Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing, Lisbon, New York, Singapore, Jakarta, Los Angeles, and Milan.
Barcelona: A Favorite Among Hybrid Workers
Barcelona, which held the top spot last year, remains a favorite among hybrid workers for its digital nomad visa, reliable transportation infrastructure, and affordable cost of living. The Spanish city is known for its lively atmosphere, stunning architecture, and nearly year-round sunshine. Barcelona scored high in categories such as transportation, climate, and accommodation, making it a desirable location for workcation.
Cities in Asia also featured prominently in this year’s list, with Beijing, Singapore, and Jakarta making it to the top 10. Singapore, in particular, climbed 14 places from last year to secure the seventh spot. The city-state scored high in broadband quality and sustainability, making it an attractive destination for travelers. With its world-class airport and strategic location in Southeast Asia, Singapore is becoming a popular choice for remote workers.
