Upon arrival at the British Colonial Hotel in downtown Nassau, one is immediately captivated by the grand staircase that welcomes guests and visitors alike. This iconic staircase has been the backdrop for countless memorable moments, whether it be weddings, graduation photos, or other special events. As I made my way through the lobby, I couldn’t help but admire the blend of turn-of-the-20th-century colonial architecture with a touch of Caribbean influence. The vaulted ceiling, marble-tiled flooring, crown moldings, and Renaissance-style mural all added to the hotel’s classic and elegant ambiance.
The British Colonial Hotel has a rich history dating back to 1901 when it was originally built by railroad and oil tycoon Henry Flagler. Over the years, the hotel has changed ownership several times, most recently being part of the Hilton brand before undergoing a $50 million renovation and reopening in January. The renovation aimed to attract more leisure guests by adding a second pool, updating the pool deck, introducing new restaurant concepts, and refreshing all guestrooms and event spaces. The hotel now boasts 288 rooms, including 25 signature suites, each offering a comfortable and luxurious retreat for guests.
One of the highlights of my stay at the British Colonial was indulging in the culinary offerings at the hotel. With seven food and beverage options to choose from, including the fine-dining Mahogany Club, the Sakana Noodle and Sushi Bar, the breakfast-buffet Tamarind Market Place, and the Woodes Rogers Tavern Grill martini bar, there was no shortage of delightful dining experiences to enjoy. I particularly savored a delectable surf-and-turf meal at the Mahogany Club and a meticulously crafted tiramisu at the same venue. The ambiance at the Woodes Rogers Tavern Grill, with its dark wood tones and live jazz performers, exuded a refined and nostalgic speakeasy vibe.
The British Colonial Hotel pays homage not only to its own history but also to Bahamian heritage through a captivating mural that tells the story of the resort and the nation. From Christopher Columbus’ landing in 1492 to the Bahamas’ independence from Britain, the mural is a visual journey through time and significant events. Notably, the hotel’s connection to the James Bond series is also commemorated, with scenes from “Thunderball,” “Never Say Never Again,” and “Casino Royale” having been filmed on the premises. The lush grounds of the hotel, complete with two freshwater oceanfront pools and a pristine white-sand beach, offer guests a tranquil setting to unwind and enjoy the beauty of Nassau.
Situated on Bay Street, Nassau’s main thoroughfare, the British Colonial Hotel is ideally located within walking distance of many of the city’s top attractions. A 10-minute stroll will take you to landmarks such as the Straw Market, Pirates of Nassau, and the Queen’s Staircase, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and history of the Bahamas. Additionally, the hotel shares amenities with nearby sister properties, providing guests with access to pools and restaurants for a well-rounded vacation experience.
