Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings recently announced plans for a new two-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, their private island in the Bahamas. This development is expected to significantly increase guest counts by more than 50% within the first year of operation. Currently, access to the island is limited to tender boats from cruise ships, but the new pier will streamline the process and enhance the overall guest experience.
According to NCLH CEO Harry Sommer, the construction of the new pier is scheduled to commence this summer and is projected to be completed by late 2025. With around 400,000 passengers visiting the island annually, a 50% boost in guest throughput would bring this number up to approximately 600,000 per year starting in 2026. This expansion aligns with NCLH’s broader strategy of growth, including a significant increase in capacity from the eight-ship order across its three brands, set for delivery between 2026 and 2036.
One of the key advantages of having a pier at Great Stirrup Cay is the ability to avoid missed calls due to rough seas, which often hinders the tendering process. Sommer emphasized that by ensuring ships can dock at the island consistently, guest satisfaction scores are expected to rise. The island offers a wide range of amenities such as ziplines, cabanas, a spa, and even the unique experience of swimming with pigs. Eliminating uncertainties about accessibility will further enhance the passenger experience and potentially lead to higher yields for the company.
