Archer Aviation, a company specializing in electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOLs), recently announced that it has received a crucial certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. This certification is a significant milestone for the company as it brings them one step closer to being able to transport passengers using their innovative air taxis.
The certification process for Archer Aviation has been an arduous journey, lasting approximately two years. The company had to compile over 2,000 pages of documents and 14 manuals detailing various operational procedures, training protocols, and maintenance guidelines. Now that they have received the Part 135 certification, which essentially allows them to function as an airline, Archer is focused on getting their four-passenger eVTOL aircraft, named “Midnight,” certified by the FAA. If all goes according to plan, these air taxis could be operational as early as next year.

The company’s CEO, Adam Goldstein, highlighted the complexity of the certification process, emphasizing that the simplicity of their aircraft design should expedite the approval timeline. Managing director Andrew Chang underscored the need for synchronization between Archer’s operational advancements and United’s infrastructure requirements to ensure a smooth transition.
Archer Aviation is not the only player in the electric air taxi market. Joby Aviation, another prominent company in the industry, has already obtained its Part 135 certificate and has forged partnerships with the U.S. Air Force and Delta Air Lines. Joby’s recent acquisition of Xwing’s autonomy division further solidifies its position in the market. Additionally, Archer has teamed up with Stellantis to produce a large number of electric air taxis, indicating a growing interest from established automakers in this emerging sector.
