The World’s Best Vodka According to the International Wine and Spirits Competition

The International Wine and Spirits Competition recently announced the top scores for 2024, with a focus on vodka this time. Among thousands of entries, only two expressions managed to score a perfect 99 out of 100 points. One of these top scorers was Initiale Vodka from Maison Solignac, located in the picturesque region just south of Cognac, France. What sets Initiale Vodka apart is not only its high score but also its unique production process and flavor profile.

The Art of Craftsmanship

Pierre Solignac, the founder of Maison Solignac, is a Versailles native who immersed himself in the traditions of vodka production while living in Russia during the 1990s. Inspired by techniques dating back to the 18th Century, Solignac decided to create a vodka that reflects the essence of the spirit before industrial column distillation became the norm. Using rye grain and an ‘ultra slow distillation’ process in small copper pot stills, Initiale Vodka captures savory elements and baking spices that set it apart from the neutral grain spirits typical of the category today.

The judges at IWSC described Initiale Vodka as having “biscuity sweetness, honeyed warmth, and fragrant meadow notes. Balanced with subtle fennel and caramel nuances. A silky, creamy texture leads to a slow, warm finish.” This complex flavor profile makes Initiale Vodka perfect for pairing with high-grade sashimis, cured fishes, or indulging in a classic caviar presentation. The vodka also features hints of freshly cracked black pepper, adding an extra dimension to its taste. To fully experience the richness of Initiale Vodka, it is recommended to enjoy it chilled but never frozen.

While Initiale Vodka has received global recognition for its exceptional quality, it is currently unavailable on US shelves. However, the exposure from IWSC may help pave the way for distribution in the future. European consumers can purchase a bottle for around 55 €, making it a desirable option for vodka enthusiasts across the pond. Another noteworthy mention from this year’s IWSC is the Mango Vodka from Desi Daru, a British producer. With a score of 99, the Mango Vodka impressed judges with its fresh mango aromas and vibrant palate, making it a delightful fruit-flavored option for vodka connoisseurs.

Initiale Vodka stands out as a prime example of the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into creating exceptional spirits. With a rich history and a flavor profile that sets it apart from the rest, Initiale Vodka has rightfully earned its place as one of the top-rated vodkas in the world. While its availability may be limited for now, the recognition it has received is sure to spark interest and demand among discerning drinkers looking to elevate their sipping experience.
