Critiquing the Royal Caribbean’s New Train Experience on the Utopia of the Seas

The Royal Caribbean International has introduced a unique feature on their newest ship called Royal Railway – Utopia Station, which aims to take passengers on a virtual train journey. While the design of the ship was reminiscent of its sister ships, the train concept was a new addition to the Oasis-class ships. The experience begins with the clickety-clack of black tiles with white letters flipping on the board, resembling a train station schedule. However, the actual train station concept was more reminiscent of an underground platform, with low ceilings, cement floors, and steam blasting from the railcar’s wheels. The theme of this particular train ride was the Wild West, set between the 1880s and 1940s, complete with a “Wanted” poster of the Yates triplets.

Upon entering the dining car on the Royal Railway, passengers are greeted with a thematic menu inspired by the Wild West, featuring dishes like “fart and dart baked beans” and “Soapy Smith’s corn chowder.” The place settings are detailed, and the ambiance is intentionally cold to offset the warmth generated by the tight quarters. The dessert options include a hand-rolled milk chocolate cigar stuffed with sweet cream, served with ice cream. While the food offerings are said to be excellent, the main highlight of this dining experience is the virtual journey through the Wild West that unfolds through the windows of the train.

As the train begins its virtual journey through the Wild West, passengers are treated to computer-generated imagery (CGI) displayed on the windows of the railcars. The scenes depict the red and yellow sandy colors of the West, cactuses, small town buildings, and grazing horses. The CGI visuals, sourced from the set of the film “Oppenheimer,” provide a realistic and immersive experience for passengers. The ambiance is enhanced by epic adventure music with a Western theme, adding to the overall atmosphere of the journey. Additionally, storytelling and theatrics are incorporated into the experience, making it an engaging and interactive dinner adventure for passengers of all ages.

The Royal Railway experience on the Utopia of the Seas is priced at $24.99 for kids and $74.99 for adults, accommodating a total of 48 passengers per dinner seating. The company plans to introduce less-dramatic train tours on the ship, suitable for date nights, with themes ranging from the Wild West to Marco Polo’s journey through the Silk Road. These unique train experiences are designed to offer passengers a one-of-a-kind dining adventure while onboard the Utopia of the Seas.
