Exploring Culinary Excellence with Oceania Cruises: A Foodie’s Paradise at Sea

In the realm of small-ship cruising, Oceania Cruises stands out as a culinary trailblazer, boasting itself as the purveyor of the “finest cuisine at sea.” The claim is bold, especially in an industry saturated with luxury competitors. However, Oceania Cruises distinguishes itself by offering top-notch culinary experiences without the additional charges that have become common in specialty dining aboard most ships, both big and small.

On a recent voyage through the enchanting Greek Isles and Turkey onboard the Oceania Riviera, I was able to witness firsthand the ship’s culinary expertise, which extends far beyond its complimentary gourmet dining options at four exclusive reservation-only restaurants: Red Ginger, Toscana, Jacques, and Polo Grill. The culinary focus onboard the Riviera is evident in every aspect, including the daily excursions which feature a mix of traditional, active, and intimate experiences. Notably, there are daily tours dedicated to gastronomy and wine, along with an onboard cooking school that offers classes led by master chefs.

One standout excursion during my journey was a small-group tour in Santorini, organized by Oceania in collaboration with Food & Wine Trails, a culinary travel specialist. Led by local sommeliers, chefs, and food experts, these tours aim to introduce visitors to the authentic flavors of the region. During this excursion, I discovered that Santorini is home to some of the oldest continuously cultivated vineyards globally, producing exceptional crisp white wines. A visit to the Boutari Winery, founded by the renowned Yiannis Boutari, provided insights into the island’s wine history, unique agriculture, and its impact on winemaking.

Another highlight of my culinary escapade was a chef-led expedition in the Turkish village of Kirazli, located a short drive from the port of Kusadasi. While many opted to explore historical sites in the scorching Mediterranean heat, I chose to accompany Oceania’s chef instructor Stephanie Hersh on a culinary adventure. From sampling local produce at a roadside stand to savoring a feast of regional delights at a quaint boutique hotel, the experience was truly immersive. Hands-on lessons in making Turkish dolmas and manti added a personal touch to the journey.

Back onboard, the culinary indulgence continued with an array of gourmet options at the specialty restaurants, Grand Dining Room, and the Terrace Cafe. Each venue offered a unique culinary experience, from creamy gnocchi at Toscana to delectable pad thai at Red Ginger. The Grand Dining Room, known for its fine dining, served dishes that rivaled those of the specialty restaurants. Our standout favorite was the beef bourguignon, expertly paired with perfectly cooked noodles, a true masterpiece on a plate.
