Twenty years ago, my first experience on Meads Bay in Anguilla left a lasting impression on me. The pristine shoreline, uncrowded beaches, and family-friendly ambiance made it stand out in the Caribbean. Upon my recent return, I was pleasantly surprised to find that while there had been some development, the essence of Meads Bay remained intact. With long stretches of beach bordered by coastal grasses and low shrubs, it still exuded a sense of tranquility and natural beauty. The additional dining options now available, ranging from upscale establishments to barefoot beach cuisine, added to the charm of the area.
During my stay, I had the opportunity to explore the luxurious Four Seasons Resort and Residences Anguilla, which is located at the western end of Meads Bay. Originally built as a Viceroy and converted in 2016, the resort offers a range of accommodations from rooms and suites to spacious villas and townhouses. The detached residences are particularly popular among sports superstars, according to a local taxi driver. The personalized service at the resort, including dedicated residence assistants, exemplified the Four Seasons standard of hospitality. The breakfast buffet was outstanding, and the resort’s dining options, including its most formal dining room, Salt, set against the backdrop of Meads Bay, were a culinary delight.
Luxury and Privacy at Tranquility Beach
For a more intimate experience, I also spent time at Tranquility Beach, situated in the heart of Meads Bay. This boutique property offers 12 suites and three villas, providing five-star service in a secluded setting. The beach butlers catered to every need, from mixing drinks to offering chilled towels, while each accommodation boasted a terrace with a hot tub and a fully equipped kitchen. While there is no restaurant onsite, guests can explore a variety of dining options within walking distance along the beach. For a unique culinary experience, Tranquility Beach can arrange for local celebrity chef Kylon Hull to prepare a meal in your unit, offering a taste of Anguillian flavors and hospitality.
At the eastern end of Meads Bay stands the iconic Malliouhana, Anguilla’s original five-star resort. With its colonial period decor and Caribbean influences, the hotel exudes a sense of history and elegance. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Malliouhana has maintained its reputation as a luxurious retreat that pays homage to its heritage. For a gourmet experience beyond Meads Bay, guests can visit the acclaimed restaurant at Quintessence on Long Bay Beach, offering a unique culinary journey inspired by global flavors.
While there are other notable five-star properties on the island, such as Cap Juluca and the Aurora Anguilla Resort and Golf Club, the allure of Meads Bay lies in the collective experience it offers. Beyond the luxurious accommodations and world-class dining options, Meads Bay fosters a sense of community that transcends individual properties.
