Exploring the Texas Hill Country: A Journey Through Its Wine Wonders

In late November 2024, I had the unique opportunity to guide Dr. Erika Szymanki, the author of the insightful book *From Terrain to Brain: Forays into the Many Sciences of Wine*, through the enchanting Texas Hill Country. Over the past year, my work with various wineries across Texas had not only bolstered my enthusiasm for the local wine scene but had also given me a deeper appreciation for its unique characteristics and advancements, particularly in sustainability. When the chance to showcase this vibrant region arose, I seized it, excited to share the artistry and excellence of Texas wines with a knowledgeable connoisseur.

Texas Hill Country is renowned for its burgeoning wine industry, nestled along Highway 290, where vineyard after vineyard presents itself amidst breathtaking landscapes. My selection of wineries was carefully curated based on both personal favorites and notable recommendations, ultimately landing on three distinguished establishments: William Chris Vineyards, Ab Astris Winery, and Siboney Cellars. Given the limited time, choosing between several enticing options was akin to selecting my favorite child; it was indeed a challenging yet fulfilling endeavor.

Our first destination was William Chris Vineyards, an exemplary establishment known not just for its wines but also for its commitment to quality and sustainability practices. The warm welcome from Kelsey Kramer, the Director for Education, and Chris Brundrett, the Co-Founder and Winemaker, set a positive tone for our day. We were fortunate to sample a flight of 100% Texas wines, showcasing the true potential of the state’s terroir.

The wine at William Chris is representative of a broader movement within Texas—a shift toward embracing local grapes and embodying the distinct character of the region. Each sip we took was a testament to the intricate balance of environment, craft, and innovation that defines Texas viticulture. For Dr. Szymanki, an expert in the science of wine, the discussions around their production methods and the importance of terroir provided an enriching perspective.

Next on our itinerary was Ab Astris Winery, where the serene landscape complemented the remarkable experience that awaited us. We were greeted by Mike Nelson, who shared his extensive knowledge while we savored an unforgettable Fiano—a grape variety rarely found in the mainstream but adored by those who appreciate crisp, distinctive whites. The ambiance was beautifully designed to enhance the tasting experience, creating a sense of warmth and hospitality that is often hard to find. Winemaker Barbara Lecuona shared insights into their production process, while Miguel Lecuona ensured that our glasses were perpetually filled and our plates were abundant with delightful bites.

Siboney reflects the heart of Texas wine culture—passion, craftsmanship, and connection to the community. Their approach to winemaking and customer experience resonates with visitors, making every visit not just about the wine, but about the people and stories behind it.

In my conversations with Dr. Szymanki, a recurring theme was the diversity of the Texas wine landscape.
