The recent outbreak of Salmonella in cucumbers has left hundreds of people ill across the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that at least 449 individuals in 31 states, as well as the District of Columbia, have fallen ill due to this outbreak. The Source of the Outbreak

Initially, the outbreak was believed to be caused by two separate strains of Salmonella. However, further investigations revealed that Salmonella Africana and Salmonella Braenderup were more closely related than previously thought. As a result, the CDC and FDA identified Bedner Growers, Inc., of Boynton Beach and Thomas Produce Company, of Boca Raton, as likely sources of the outbreak. It is worth noting that these may not be the only sources of the contamination, as more investigations are ongoing.

Thomas Produce Company came under suspicion after samples of its canal water tested positive for Salmonella Braenderup. Further analysis confirmed that this strain matched the one causing illness in individuals. Similarly, Bedner Growers became a suspect when multiple strains of Salmonella were found on their premises. It is evident that having Salmonella present in the environment where cucumbers are grown and handled poses a significant risk to public health.

The last reported case of Salmonella illness in this outbreak dates back to June 4, 2024. While both growers have indicated that their growing seasons are over, the risk of contamination may not have entirely passed. It is crucial to continue taking precautions when handling cucumbers. Washing them thoroughly, cleaning all utensils and surfaces that come into contact with them, and cooking them to a safe temperature are essential steps to prevent infection.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection can range from mild diarrhea to severe illness requiring hospitalization. Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as young children, the elderly, and those with chronic medical conditions, are particularly vulnerable. It is essential to be cautious when consuming cucumbers or products containing cucumbers to avoid contracting Salmonella.
