Emmy Hise, a respected figure in hospitality analytics, provided a sobering outlook on the city’s performance, marking 2024 as the “trough of the recovery.” This pessimism was supported by observable trends showing a decline in average daily rates (ADR) and revenue per available room (RevPAR). With ADR having fallen approximately 3.8% and RevPAR declining by about 3.7% through October 2024, San Francisco found itself lagging behind other U.S. markets, having once commanded some of the highest hotel rates in the country.
A Steep Climb Back to Prominence
The declining metrics have contributed to a new reality where San Francisco now rates at the bottom for hotel rate recovery since 2019. The numbers tell a revealing story: in 2019, the city boasted an ADR of $247, but current rates linger at around $220, a notable dip beneath even pre-pandemic levels of 2016. The optimism surrounding the visitor economy is not unfounded. San Francisco Travel’s forecast anticipates a surge in visitor numbers, from 23.2 million in 2024 to 23.9 million in 2025. Additionally, the financial injection expected to follow this increase is substantial, with projected visitor spending escalating from $9.24 billion to $10 billion.
To further enhance the visitor experience, the city is implementing innovative strategies designed to activate neighborhoods and make San Francisco more welcoming and engaging. New entertainment zones will allow outdoor alcohol service, along with expanded events like street festivals and night markets, which aim to bolster the local economy and create vibrant community interactions.
