The Conservation Efforts of Disney Cruise Line at Lookout Cay

Disney Cruise Line embarked on a journey to create Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the southern tip of Eleuthera, but before they could begin building, they had to address the relocation of hundreds of coral and human-sized sponges, among other challenges. By partnering with biologists and expanding their conservation management team, Disney Cruise Line aimed to minimize the impact on wildlife in the area.

The construction of Lookout Cay was carefully planned to minimize disruption to the natural habitat. The pier was designed as a trestle pier to avoid dredging into the sea bed, which could harm the sensitive coral reefs. Additionally, 800 pieces of coral were relocated to ensure their survival, while barrel sponges were moved using a creative solution involving a vertical tulle shoe rack.

To monitor the impact of Lookout Cay on wildlife, biologists were sent to Eleuthera periodically over four years to document the birds and other wildlife in the area. Birds were tagged with detection devices to track changes in behavior once the destination was operational. The data collected is crucial in understanding how to coexist with wildlife and minimize disturbances.

Disney Cruise Line is not only focused on conservation but also on educating guests about the wildlife in the area. By partnering with NatGeo Kids, kids visiting Sebastian’s Cove at Lookout Cay can learn about the land, sea, and sky, as well as various animals like land crabs and loggerhead sea turtles. Additionally, the creation of a nature trail with informative signs will provide guests with insight into the diverse ecosystem of the area.

Disney Cruise Line’s conservation efforts at Lookout Cay highlight the importance of balancing tourism with wildlife preservation. By taking proactive steps to protect the environment and collaborating with experts in the field, Disney Cruise Line is setting a positive example for responsible tourism practices. Through ongoing monitoring, education, and awareness initiatives, Lookout Cay is not only a beautiful destination but also a testament to the value of sustainable development in the travel industry.
