The Future of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon: A Look at the Upcoming Hospitality Expansion

Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is continuing its growth in the hospitality sector, with plans to open a second Retreat-branded hotel in the Icelandic highlands by 2027. The new hotel will be located near the company’s existing Highland Base at Kerlingafjöll resort, which debuted last July. This mountain destination will cater to adventure-seeking travelers, offering a mix of accommodations ranging from hotels to campsites.

The Highland Base is situated in a very remote part of Iceland, making it an ideal location for travelers looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. However, reaching the Highland Base from Reykjavik can be challenging, as the journey takes approximately three and a half hours by car or bus on unpaved roads. Despite the remote location, Blue Lagoon aims to provide a unique and unforgettable experience for guests.

In addition to the expansion of its hospitality offerings, Blue Lagoon is also investing in improving its flagship geothermal spa and other facilities. The Silica Hotel, one of the company’s existing properties, is undergoing a renovation expected to be completed by the end of the year. Updates slated for late 2024 include upgraded changing facilities, gender-inclusive locker rooms, and new water experiences such as a cold plunge, updated sauna, and the installation of a “steam cave” and two new massage waterfalls.

One of the key focuses of Blue Lagoon’s expansion and updates is to better integrate its facilities with the surrounding environment. The company is working on revamping the welcome house arrival area to align with protective barriers that have been set up to shield the site from potential lava flow. This new welcome house is scheduled to open by the end of next year, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism.

Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is poised for continued growth and development in the hospitality sector, with the upcoming opening of a second Retreat-branded hotel in the highlands of Iceland. The remote location, focus on adventure travel, and commitment to sustainability set Blue Lagoon apart as a unique and sought-after destination for travelers looking to experience Iceland’s natural beauty. With ongoing enhancements and updates to its facilities, Blue Lagoon is well-positioned to provide guests with a memorable and immersive experience in the heart of Iceland’s stunning landscapes.
