The Importance of Airlines Complying with Refund Requirements

Recent developments in the airline industry have brought about a strong warning from U.S Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. He has specifically addressed the CEOs of the top ten U.S. airlines regarding the need to comply with refund requirements that were put into effect with the passing of the FAA Reauthorization Act in May.

In his letter sent out on July 30th, Buttigieg expressed the Department’s concern over the thousands of customer complaints received in recent weeks. The major worry is that some airlines may not be clearly informing travelers of their right to refunds. There is even suspicion that some airlines may be deceiving passengers into thinking they are not entitled to a refund at all. This lack of transparency is troubling and goes against the regulations set forth in the new FAA law.

One of the key events that shed light on this issue was the CrowdStrike IT outage on July 19, which resulted in a staggering 3,400 flight cancellations in the U.S. on that day alone. Subsequently, there were over 13,000 flight delays caused by this incident. To make matters worse, airlines continued to cancel flights over the following days, with Delta and United facing significant challenges in this regard. Delta, in particular, had over 6,300 flight cancellations over a span of six days following the initial disruption.

The new FAA law clearly states that refunds should be the default option for any customer whose flight is cancelled or significantly delayed. This means that airlines must inform customers of their right to a refund and cannot automatically issue vouchers or flight credits without the passenger’s consent. Additionally, the law specifies that vouchers must be valid for at least five years if a passenger chooses this option.

Buttigieg’s letter serves as a reminder for airlines to be transparent in their communications with passengers. Any time a flight is cancelled or significantly changed, airlines must clearly communicate to passengers that they are entitled to a refund. It is crucial for airlines to adhere to these refund requirements to ensure that passengers are treated fairly and in accordance with the law.

It is imperative for airlines to comply with refund requirements as mandated by the FAA Reauthorization Act. Transparency, honesty, and clear communication with passengers are essential in maintaining trust and integrity within the airline industry.
