The Most Affordable Place for Expats: Vietnam

Vietnam has been ranked as the most affordable country for expats for the fourth year in a row, according to a report by InterNations. This Southeast Asian country is not only known for its stunning landscapes and rich culture but also for being budget-friendly for expats looking to relocate for work or retirement.

According to the survey conducted by InterNations, Vietnam ranked first out of 53 destinations when it comes to personal finances. More than 12,000 expats participated in the survey, providing insights into the cost of living, financial satisfaction, and disposable household income. It was found that 86% of expats living in Vietnam rate its cost of living favorably, which is more than twice the global average. Additionally, 65% of respondents in the country reported being satisfied with their financial situation compared to 54% globally.

Aside from the low cost of living, expats in Vietnam also tend to be paid more compared to the global average. The report states that close to double the global average report a gross yearly income of 150k USD or more among expats in Vietnam. General job satisfaction is also very high, with the country jumping from 24th rank last year to 3rd in 2024 for this factor. Work-life balance is prioritized in Vietnam, with less than half of the country’s expat population working full time. This shift in focus from career advancement to work-life balance has been noted as a key factor contributing to expat satisfaction in the country.

In addition to financial aspects, Vietnam also offers a high quality of life for expats. Survey respondents highlighted the stress-free environment and overall happiness they experienced living in the country. Expats also praised the ease of finding affordable housing in Vietnam, with countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia ranking high in this aspect.

The InterNations Expat Insider study not only focused on personal finances but also on other aspects of expat life such as general happiness, quality of life, ease of settling in, and working abroad. Vietnam made it into the overall top 10 list, ranking 8th overall out of 53 destinations globally. Along with Vietnam, other Asian countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines also made it into the top 10 list. This highlights the overall satisfaction expats feel living in these countries across various aspects of life abroad.

Vietnam stands out as a top destination for expats looking for a perfect balance of affordability, job opportunities, quality of life, and overall happiness. As the country continues to attract a diverse expat population, it solidifies its position as a prime location for those seeking a fulfilling and financially stable life overseas.
