The Rising Tide of TMC Hospitality: An Interview with CEO Philip Bates

TMC Hospitality, a subsidiary of the TMC Group, has been making waves in the boutique hotel industry since its inception in 2016. Focused on creating unique and engaging experiences for guests, the company introduced the Bode concept in 2018, followed by the launch of the Drift lifestyle brand in 2021. These two brands cater to different segments of the market, with Drift positioned as upper-upscale and Bode as upper-midscale.

In a recent interview with TMC Hospitality co-founder and CEO, Philip Bates, he discussed the differentiation between Bode and Drift. While Drift caters to more traditional travelers, Bode is designed to appeal to social group travelers, filling a gap in the market left untouched by traditional hotels and Airbnb. Despite concerns about the competitive environment in Nashville, where both Bode and Drift have a presence, Bates remains confident in the unique positioning of the brands. Drift, in particular, is seen as a “lifestyle light” concept, offering a more tech-forward and affordable option for guests.

One of the key focuses for the Drift brand is the integration of local culture into each hotel. Bates emphasized the importance of creating a strong social element for locals, making the hotel a pillar within the community. From themed food and beverage events to partnerships with local businesses, Drift aims to provide an authentic and immersive experience for guests. By understanding and catering to the needs and preferences of the local community, TMC Hospitality believes that they can create a unique and memorable experience for all guests.

Expansion Plans and Future Growth

Looking towards the future, Bates revealed that TMC Hospitality has signed a new project in Fulton Market in Chicago, marking the company’s continued expansion into new markets. With a focus on regions where they already have a presence, such as Baja and California, TMC Hospitality seeks to streamline their expansion efforts and continue to grow their portfolio of hotels. By staying true to their core philosophy of creating unique and engaging experiences for guests, TMC Hospitality aims to solidify its position as a key player in the boutique hotel space.
