The Top Winners of the 2024 Scotch Whisky Masters

The Scotch Whisky Masters recently announced the results of their blind tasting competition for 2024. The panel of expert judges selected 30 expressions across various sub-styles of scotch whisky to receive the highest honor of “Master.” In this article, we will delve into one particular sub-style – single malt scotch whisky – and focus on one of the biggest winners of the competition: Royal Brackla.

Royal Brackla, a distillery with a rich history spanning over two centuries, secured two Master medals for their highland single malts aged between 19 and 30 years. The 21-year-old expression, finished in a combination of Oloroso, Palo Cortado, and Pedro Ximénez barrels, offers a symphony of flavors like cinnamon, cocoa, and maple syrup. On the other hand, the 25-year-old whisky, exclusively finished in PX barrels, presents a deeper profile with notes of dried figs, raisins, and leather. Both whiskies boast a silky mouthfeel, enveloping the palate with a slow retreat of flavors.

While the 21-year-old Royal Brackla can be found on US shelves for around $600 per bottle, its older sibling, the 25-year-old, is a rare gem primarily targeted towards the British market with a price tag of £1,025. Apart from Royal Brackla, other notable winners from the competition include The GlenAllachie, Kilchoman, and John Dewar & Sons, the parent company of Royal Brackla.

The US scotch whisky market has been experiencing significant growth, especially in the super premium single malt category. According to data from the Distilled Spirits Council, there was a 140% increase in sales of super premium single malts in 2023. Despite this trend, Royal Brackla remains somewhat under the radar among American scotch enthusiasts.

Royal Brackla’s signature style is characterized by its rich and fruity profile, attributed in part to its extended fermentation process and the use of sherry casks. This flavor profile resonates well with whisky aficionados who appreciate complex and indulgent drams. If you have yet to explore the offerings from Royal Brackla, the results of the Scotch Whisky Masters should serve as a compelling invitation to do so.

The 2024 Scotch Whisky Masters has brought to light the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of single malt scotch whiskies, with Royal Brackla emerging as a standout performer. With its rich history, unique expressions, and distinct flavor profile, Royal Brackla is a distillery worthy of attention and admiration in the world of whisky connoisseurs.
