United Airlines Expands Horizons: New International Routes for Summer 2024

The announcement of these new routes presents a diversified selection that spans far-reaching locations such as Nuuk, Greenland; Ulaanbataar, Mongolia; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Faro and Madeira in Portugal; Bilbao, Spain; Palermo in Sicily; and Dakar, Senegal. Among these destinations, only Dakar boasts current service from another U.S. airline, Delta. Additionally, Neos—a leisure airline based in Italy—offers two weekly flights from New York to Palermo, with United taking the lead in expanding direct offerings to five of these impressive locales.

United Airlines plans to launch flights to Nuuk, Palermo, Bilbao, Faro, and Madeira from its Newark hub, while services to Dakar will initiate from Washington Dulles. Insightfully augmenting its Asian connectivity, United will operate flights to Ulaanbataar and Kaohsiung from Tokyo, further solidifying its growing operational base in Guam. Most of these routes will be seasonal, with some, such as the daily Tokyo-Kaohsiung flight and a thrice-weekly Dulles-Dakar link, being offered year-round.

A notable detail in this expansion is United’s postponed Newark-Faro service, initially planned for summer 2023 but delayed due to increased scrutiny from the FAA concerning safety protocols. Each route is set to take off between May 1 and July 11, 2024, suggesting a well-timed entry into what could soon become popular travel seasons for these storied locales.

United Airlines’ new route to Nuuk is particularly intriguing, as it is made possible by significant infrastructural advancements at Nuuk Airport, including a runway expansion and a new terminal, expected to open on November 28.
